There is something special about photographing a proposal when one person knows exactly what is about to happen — and the other has absolutely no idea.

This surprise proposal took place at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by the beautiful architecture and atmosphere of the university campus.

Our goal was simple: stay unnoticed, capture the real reaction, and then turn the rest of the evening into a relaxed mini engagement session.

And, of course, she said yes.

Planning the Surprise Proposal

For proposal photography, preparation is one of the most important parts of the entire session.

Unlike a regular couple session, we don’t get a second chance to photograph the actual proposal.

Before the couple arrived, we came to Capital University early to look at the location, prepare our cameras, choose our angles, and decide where each of us would be positioned.

Since we always photograph proposals as a husband-and-wife team with two photographers, we can capture the moment from different perspectives.

One photographer can concentrate on the reaction and emotions while the other captures the wider scene and everything happening around the couple.

Most importantly, we try to stay completely unnoticed until the proposal happens.

The Moment She Said Yes

When the couple arrived, everything was already prepared.

We stayed at a distance and waited.

Then came the moment we had been waiting for.

He got down on one knee.

For a few seconds, nothing else mattered.

The surprise, her reaction, the excitement, the ring, the smiles — these are exactly the moments we want to preserve when we photograph a proposal.

There is very little posing involved during this part.

We simply document what happens.

That is what makes proposal photography so different from a regular portrait session. The most important photographs are often created before the couple even realizes we are there.

And after she said yes, the surprise turned into a celebration.

Engagement Photos Around Capital University

The proposal itself was only the beginning.

After giving the couple some time to enjoy the moment, we continued with a mini engagement photo session around the Capital University campus.

This is something we love including with our proposal sessions.

Immediately after getting engaged, the emotions are still fresh. Couples are excited, happy, and usually much less focused on the camera.

That makes this one of our favorite times to create portraits.

We walked around the campus, looking for simple backgrounds, interesting architecture, natural light, and places where the couple could interact without feeling overly posed.

We photographed a combination of portraits and candid moments to tell more of the story than just the proposal itself.

How We Photograph a Secret Proposal

One of the biggest questions we receive from people planning a proposal is:

“How do you photograph it without my partner seeing you?”

The answer is planning.

Before the proposal, we discuss the exact location, approximate arrival time, where you should stand, which direction you should face, and where we will be waiting.

We normally arrive before you.

By the time you reach the proposal spot, our cameras are ready and we already know where the moment is going to happen.

Because there are two of us, we can position ourselves at different angles instead of standing together with two cameras pointed directly at you.

Once you get down on one knee, we start photographing the moment.

After the proposal, we introduce ourselves and continue with the couple session.

For your partner, the photographers become another part of the surprise.

Do You Need to Know How to Pose?

Absolutely not.

One of the most common concerns couples have before a photo session is that they don’t know how to pose.

Most people don’t.

And they shouldn’t have to.

During the engagement portion of the session, we guide you through everything.

Sometimes that means showing you exactly where to stand. Other times we simply give you something to do and photograph what happens naturally.

We pay attention to hands, body position, movement, backgrounds, light, and composition so you don’t have to think about those things.

Your job is simply to enjoy the fact that you just got engaged.
