A Natural Engagement Session at Hoover Reservoir in Ohio
For this engagement session at Hoover Reservoir near Columbus, Ohio, we wanted to create something simple, natural, and romantic.
We didn’t need a complicated location or dozens of different backgrounds.
Instead, we found a beautiful open field with a large tree and a quiet wooded area nearby. These two simple settings gave us everything we needed to create a complete engagement gallery with two completely different moods.
The open field gave us clean, bright, and romantic photographs.
The forest gave us something deeper, quieter, and more atmospheric.
Together, they created exactly the balance we were looking for.
Starting in the Open Field
We began the engagement session in a large open field.
What immediately caught our attention was a beautiful tree standing in the open landscape.
Instead of treating the tree as simply a background, we used it as an important part of the composition.
For some photographs, we stepped farther away and allowed the couple to become part of the landscape. The open space around them created a clean composition without unnecessary distractions.
For other photographs, we moved closer and focused more on the couple, their expressions, and their connection.
This is one of the reasons we love simple locations.
When there isn’t too much happening in the background, your attention naturally goes to the people in the photograph.
One Beautiful Tree Can Be Enough
You don’t always need a famous location to create beautiful engagement photographs.
Sometimes one interesting tree, an open field, good light, and the right composition are enough.
For this session, the tree became a natural frame for the couple.
Its shape gave structure to wider photographs while the surrounding greenery kept everything feeling soft and natural.
We could photograph the same area from different distances and angles and create images that felt completely different.
The location itself was simple.
That simplicity allowed us to concentrate on what mattered most — the couple.
Natural Movement and Genuine Moments
We never expect our couples to arrive knowing how to pose.
Most people don’t feel completely comfortable when two cameras are pointed at them, especially during the first few minutes of a session.
That’s completely normal.
Our job is to help you forget about the cameras.
Instead of creating a long sequence of static poses, we use movement and simple direction.
Walk together.
Get closer.
Talk to each other.
Hold hands.
Look at each other.
Sometimes we give very specific direction. Other times, we create the situation and wait for a genuine moment to happen.
Because we photograph together as a husband-and-wife team, we can also capture these moments from two different perspectives.
The goal is to create photographs that look beautiful and intentional without making the couple feel stiff or overly posed.
Moving Into the Forest
After creating the lighter and more open photographs in the field, we moved into the wooded area.
Immediately, the atmosphere changed.
The open field gave us space and simplicity.
The forest gave us depth, texture, shadows, and a much more intimate feeling.
This allowed us to create another side of the engagement session without traveling to a completely different location.
We used the trees around the couple to create natural layers in the photographs and looked for small areas where the light came through the forest.
The result was more atmospheric and slightly more dramatic while still keeping the photography natural.
Two Different Looks in One Engagement Session
This contrast became one of our favorite things about the session.
In the field, the photographs felt open, romantic, and clean.
In the forest, they became more intimate and cinematic.
But because both locations were part of the same natural environment, the final gallery still felt connected.
This is something we always look for when choosing a location.
We don’t necessarily need ten different backgrounds.
We would rather find a few good areas that allow us to create meaningful variety.
A change in light, distance, composition, or environment can completely transform a photograph.
Simple Locations Create Timeless Photos
There is often a temptation to choose the most impressive possible location for engagement photos.
But impressive doesn’t always mean better.
A busy location can sometimes compete with the couple for attention.
For this Hoover Reservoir engagement session, the simplicity was exactly what made the location work.
An open field.
One beautiful tree.
A quiet forest.
Natural light.
And two people enjoying their engagement session together.
Nothing else was really necessary.
Instead of making the location the subject of every photograph, we used it to support the couple and the feeling we wanted to create.
You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose
One of the most common things couples tell us before their engagement session is:
“We’re awkward in photos.”
That’s okay.
Knowing how to pose is not your responsibility.
Throughout the session, we help with body position, hands, movement, and where to look. We also pay attention to the background and light while you concentrate on each other.
As the session continues, couples usually become much more comfortable.
That is when photographs begin to feel less like a photo shoot and more like genuine moments between two people.
Our goal is to find the balance between direction and spontaneity.
We want you to look your best, but we still want the photographs to feel like you.
Choosing a Natural Engagement Location in Columbus, Ohio
If you love natural engagement photos, you don’t necessarily need flowers, elaborate gardens, or dramatic scenery.
