Choosing a location for engagement photos in Columbus is about more than finding a beautiful park.

A location can look great online but work very differently during a real photo session. Lighting, crowds, walking distance, background variety, and the time of day can completely change the final photographs.

This guide is based entirely on our own experience.

We are a husband-and-wife photography team based in the Columbus area, and every location in this guide is somewhere we have personally photographed couples.

We’ll share what each location is actually like during a session, what kind of photography it works best for, when we prefer to shoot there, and real photographs we’ve created at each location.

What We Look for in an Engagement Photo Location

When we choose a location with a couple, we usually consider several things:

Light — how the location looks at different times of day.
Variety — whether we can create different looks without driving somewhere else.
Backgrounds — nature, architecture, water, city streets, gardens, or open fields.
Style — romantic, natural, cinematic, editorial, elegant, or urban.
Walking distance — how easy it is to move between good photo spots during the session.

The best location is not necessarily the most famous one. It is the place that fits the couple, their outfits, and the overall feeling they want from their photos.

Quick Guide: Choosing Your Engagement Photo Location

As we add locations to this guide, we’ll compare them based on:

Best for: overall style and scenery
Best time: when we prefer to photograph there
Photo variety: how many different looks we can create
Style: natural, romantic, editorial, urban, cinematic, etc.
Walking required: how much moving around is normally needed

Some of our favorite engagement photo locations around Columbus include Inniswood Metro Gardens for gardens and variety, Alum Creek for sunset and open fields, the Ohio Statehouse for elegant architecture, German Village for historic streets, Hoover Dam for nature and water, and Ash Cave at Hocking Hills for a more adventurous session.

Alum Creek — Open Field Near the Dam

Best for Natural, Romantic Engagement Photos

The open field near the dam at Alum Creek is one of our favorite locations for couples who want a simple, natural setting with plenty of space and soft evening light.

The area works especially well for relaxed engagement sessions because there are very few distractions in the background. The open field keeps the focus on the couple and gives the photos a clean, cinematic look.

Our Experience at Alum Creek

We have photographed couples here several times, especially around sunset.

The open space gives us a lot of freedom to work with movement, walking shots, wide environmental portraits, and more intimate close-up photos without needing to move far.

When the light gets lower, the field becomes especially beautiful and creates a warm, romantic atmosphere.

Best for: Natural, romantic, cinematic couple photos
Best time: Golden hour and sunset
Photo variety: Good — open field, greenery, wide landscape
Style: Natural, cinematic, relaxed
Walking required: Minimal

Swan Lake Event Center — Elegant Engagement Photos in Powell, Ohio

Best for Romantic, Elegant, and Refined Couple Photos

Swan Lake Event Center is a beautiful location for couples who want engagement photos with a more elegant and polished atmosphere.

The property offers a mix of landscaped grounds, water, greenery, and refined architecture, which gives us several different looks without needing to drive between locations.

Our Experience at Swan Lake Event Center

We have photographed couples here and really like how much variety the property gives within a relatively small area.

We can create romantic portraits near the water, use the landscaped grounds for softer natural photos, and incorporate the venue architecture for a more elegant or editorial look.

It works especially well for couples who want their engagement session to feel a little more formal than a typical park session.

Best for: Elegant, romantic, polished engagement photos
Best time: Late afternoon and golden hour
Photo variety: Excellent — water, greenery, landscaping, architecture
Style: Romantic, elegant, editorial
Walking required: Moderate

Cornfield Engagement Photos Near Columbus, Ohio

Best for Warm, Rustic, and Natural Couple Photos

A cornfield can be a great engagement photo location for couples who want something simple, natural, and different from the usual parks or city streets.

The tall corn, open sky, and warm evening light create a relaxed countryside atmosphere and give the session a more rustic, cinematic feeling.

Our Experience with Cornfield Engagement Sessions

We photographed a couple near a cornfield in the Columbus area and really liked how clean and natural the background looked.

The location worked especially well around sunset, when the light became softer and warmer. We used the edge of the field, open space, and surrounding countryside to create a mix of wider environmental photos and closer romantic portraits.

Because the setting is simple, the focus stays almost entirely on the couple.

Best for: Rustic, natural, cinematic engagement photos
Best time: Golden hour and sunset
Photo variety: Good — cornfield, open sky, countryside scenery
Style: Romantic, rustic, cinematic
Walking required: Minimal

Inniswood Metro Gardens — Romantic Engagement Photos Near Columbus

Best for Gardens, Greenery, and Romantic Couple Photos

Inniswood Metro Gardens is one of our favorite locations for engagement photos near Columbus, Ohio.

The gardens offer a lot of variety in one place — flowers, greenery, pathways, trees, small architectural details, and the waterfall area — so we can create several different looks without needing to drive between locations.

Our Experience at Inniswood Metro Gardens

We have photographed couples here many times and like how different the location can feel depending on the season and time of day.

It works especially well for relaxed romantic sessions because we can move through the gardens naturally, using different backgrounds as we go. Around sunset, the light becomes softer and warmer, which gives the photos a beautiful natural feel.

Best for: Romantic, natural, garden engagement photos
Best time: Late afternoon and golden hour
Photo variety: Excellent — gardens, greenery, pathways, waterfall
Style: Romantic, natural, elegant
Walking required: Moderate

Ash Cave at Hocking Hills — Adventure Engagement Photos in Ohio

Best for Waterfalls, Rock Formations, and Dramatic Nature

Ash Cave at Hocking Hills is a beautiful engagement photo location for couples who want something more dramatic than a traditional park or garden.

The massive rock formation, forest, waterfall area, and natural textures create a strong sense of scale and make the session feel adventurous and cinematic.

Our Experience at Ash Cave

We have photographed couples here and really like how different the location feels from anything around Columbus.

The cave, surrounding forest, and waterfall area give us several strong backgrounds within one session. It works especially well for wider environmental portraits as well as more intimate couple photos.

Because Ash Cave is a popular destination, timing matters. Quieter periods make the session easier and help keep the backgrounds cleaner.

Best for: Adventure, waterfalls, dramatic nature
Best time: Morning or late afternoon
Photo variety: Excellent — cave, forest, waterfall, rock formations
Style: Cinematic, adventurous, natural
Walking required: Moderate

Ohio Statehouse — Elegant Engagement Photos in Downtown Columbus

Best for Classic Architecture and Editorial Couple Photos

The Ohio Statehouse is one of the best engagement photo locations in Downtown Columbus for couples who want something elegant, clean, and more architectural than a park or garden.

The columns, stairs, stone walls, and symmetrical backgrounds create a timeless look and work especially well for more polished or editorial-style engagement photos.

Our Experience at the Ohio Statehouse

We have photographed couples here and like how much variety we can create within a small area.

We can use the front steps and columns for classic portraits, then move around the building for cleaner architectural backgrounds and more relaxed walking photos.

The location works especially well with formal or semi-formal outfits and gives the session a refined city feel without needing to travel between multiple locations.

Best for: Elegant, classic, editorial engagement photos
Best time: Late afternoon and evening
Photo variety: Excellent — columns, stairs, stone architecture, city backgrounds
Style: Elegant, editorial, timeless
Walking required: Minimal to moderate

Hoover Dam — Natural Engagement Photos Near Columbus, Ohio

Best for Forest, Water, and Relaxed Outdoor Photos

Hoover Dam is a great engagement photo location near Columbus for couples who want a natural setting with a mix of forest, water, and open scenery.

The area feels quieter and less formal than a garden or downtown location, which makes it especially good for relaxed couple sessions.

Our Experience at Hoover Dam

We have photographed couples here and like the variety we can create without needing to travel far.

The wooded areas work well for more intimate portraits, while the water and open views give us wider environmental photos. Around sunset, the light becomes softer and adds a warm, romantic feel to the session.

Best for: Natural, relaxed, outdoor engagement photos
Best time: Late afternoon and golden hour
Photo variety: Very good — forest, water, trails, open scenery
Style: Natural, romantic, cinematic
Walking required: Moderate

100 S 3rd Street — Historic Downtown Columbus Engagement Photos

Best for Classic Architecture and Editorial Couple Photos

The historic building at 100 S 3rd Street in Downtown Columbus is a great location for couples who want engagement photos with a classic, architectural feel.

The stone exterior, large steps, columns, and historic downtown surroundings create a clean and elegant background that works especially well for more polished or editorial-style portraits. The building itself is historically listed as the former Federal Post Office & Courthouse.

Our Experience at 100 S 3rd Street

We have photographed couples here and like how easily the architecture creates strong, structured compositions.

The steps and stone details work well for more formal portraits, while the surrounding downtown streets give us additional backgrounds for walking photos and more relaxed images.

It is a good option for couples who want a sophisticated city look without needing to move between several locations.

Best for: Classic, elegant, editorial engagement photos
Best time: Late afternoon and evening
Photo variety: Very good — historic architecture, steps, stone details, downtown streets
Style: Editorial, elegant, timeless
Walking required: Minimal

Photo Studio — Indoor Engagement Photos in Columbus, Ohio

Best for Clean, Controlled, and Editorial Couple Photos

A photo studio is a great option for couples who want engagement photos with a clean, polished look and complete control over the environment.

Unlike outdoor locations, a studio is not affected by rain, wind, temperature, or changing light. It also works especially well for couples who prefer a more modern, minimal, or editorial style.

Our Experience with Studio Engagement Sessions

We have photographed couples in studio settings and like how much control we have over the final look of the session.

We can work with natural window light, simple backgrounds, furniture, and more intentional posing to create a mix of relaxed portraits and more editorial images.

Studio sessions are also a great choice during winter or when the weather in Ohio is unpredictable.

Best for: Clean, modern, editorial engagement photos
Best time: Any time of day
Photo variety: Good — backgrounds, furniture, natural or controlled light
Style: Editorial, modern, minimal, romantic
Walking required: Minimal

German Village — Romantic Engagement Photos in Columbus, Ohio

Best for Historic Streets, Brick Architecture, and Editorial Couple Photos

German Village is one of the most distinctive engagement photo locations in Columbus.

The brick streets, historic homes, narrow sidewalks, greenery, and classic neighborhood architecture create a warm and timeless atmosphere that feels completely different from a park or open field.

Our Experience in German Village

We have photographed couples here and like how much variety we can create simply by walking through a few nearby streets.

One block may give us brick architecture and historic homes, while the next offers greenery, alleys, steps, or quieter residential backgrounds. It works especially well for couples who want a mix of natural interaction and more editorial city portraits.

Best for: Historic, romantic, editorial engagement photos
Best time: Late afternoon and evening
Photo variety: Excellent — brick streets, historic homes, greenery, alleys
Style: Romantic, editorial, timeless, urban
Walking required: Moderate

How We Choose the Right Engagement Photo Location

The best engagement photo location is not always the most popular one.

When we help couples choose a location, we think about the overall style they want, the time of day, outfits, lighting, how much walking is involved, and how much variety we can create during one session.

A natural location like Alum Creek or Hoover Dam works well for relaxed and cinematic photos, while the Ohio Statehouse or Downtown Columbus is better for a more elegant and editorial look. Gardens such as Inniswood offer a softer romantic atmosphere, while locations like German Village give the session more character and architecture.

The goal is to choose a place that fits the couple rather than forcing every session into the same style.

What Time Is Best for Engagement Photos in Columbus?

For most outdoor engagement sessions, we prefer late afternoon and golden hour.

The light is softer, shadows are less harsh, and the overall atmosphere feels warmer and more flattering.

That said, every location behaves differently. Trees can block the light earlier, downtown buildings create deeper shadows, and some locations work better before sunset than others.

Because we have photographed at these locations ourselves, we can usually recommend a specific time based on the place, season, and type of photos you want.

How Many Locations Do You Need?

In most cases, one good location is enough.

A place with several different backgrounds can give us plenty of variety without spending part of the session driving between locations.

For example, Inniswood Metro Gardens, German Village, and the Ohio Statehouse all allow us to create several different looks within walking distance.

If you want two very different styles — such as nature and downtown architecture — then using a second location can make sense.

What Should You Wear for Engagement Photos?

Your outfits should match both your personal style and the location.

For natural locations, simple neutral colors and softer fabrics usually work well. For architectural or downtown sessions, more polished or formal outfits can create a stronger editorial look.

Many couples also choose two outfits — one more casual and one more elegant — to create additional variety during the session.

We can also help with outfit ideas before the session based on the location you choose.
