A Clean and Natural Engagement Session at Alum Creek, Ohio
Sometimes the best engagement photographs don’t need a complicated location.
No dramatic architecture.
No elaborate decorations.
No busy background.
Just two people, beautiful natural light, and a simple environment that allows all the attention to stay exactly where it belongs — on the couple.
That was the idea behind this engagement photo session at Alum Creek near Columbus, Ohio.
From the beginning, we wanted the photographs to feel clean, natural, and timeless. Instead of searching for a location with dozens of different backgrounds, we decided to use something much simpler: an open natural space surrounded by green.
And sometimes, simplicity creates the strongest photographs.

The Idea Behind This Engagement Session
Before every couple’s session, we think about more than just finding a beautiful location.
We think about the final photograph.
What should you notice first?
What should the image feel like?
What should remain in the frame — and what should disappear?
For this session, we wanted the couple to be the strongest element in every photograph.
Alum Creek gave us exactly what we needed.
Large green spaces created a soft, almost seamless natural background. Instead of competing with the couple, the environment became part of the composition.
The result was simple:
Two people.
Green surroundings.
Natural light.
And nothing unnecessary pulling attention away from them.
Why a Simple Background Can Make a Photograph Stronger
It is easy to think that an engagement session needs an impressive location to look beautiful.
But an interesting location doesn’t automatically create an interesting photograph.
Sometimes there can actually be too much happening in the background.
Buildings, signs, cars, people, different colors, and other distractions can easily take attention away from the couple.
For this session, we wanted the opposite.
The green landscape at Alum Creek allowed us to create photographs that felt calm and visually clean.
The background was still beautiful, but it wasn’t the subject.
The couple was.
That distinction became one of the most important parts of the entire session.
Natural Instead of Overly Posed
We also didn’t want the session to feel like a long sequence of traditional poses.
Of course, we helped with positioning, movement, hands, and direction whenever it was necessary.
But instead of asking the couple to constantly stop and pose for the camera, we wanted them to interact with each other.
Walk together.
Stand close.
Talk.
Move.
Look at each other.
Forget about the cameras for a moment.
Those small interactions create photographs that feel much more personal than simply asking someone to smile at the camera.
Our job is to guide the couple enough to make the photograph look beautiful while still leaving space for something real to happen.

Using Green as Part of the Composition
One of our favorite things about this engagement session was how much we could do with essentially one dominant color.
Green surrounded the couple almost everywhere.
Instead of trying to avoid it, we used it intentionally.
The grass, trees, and distant landscape became layers in the photographs, while the couple remained visually separated from the background.
This created the clean aesthetic we were looking for from the beginning.
Some photographs were wider and showed more of the environment.
Others were much closer and focused almost entirely on expressions and connection.
But throughout the gallery, we tried to maintain the same visual language — simple, natural, and focused on the couple.
You Don’t Need a Complicated Location
This session is also a good example of something we often tell couples when planning engagement photography:
You don’t necessarily need the most famous or impressive location in Columbus.
You need a location that works for the photographs you want to create.
Sometimes historic architecture is perfect.
Sometimes downtown Columbus gives us exactly the atmosphere we need.
And sometimes an open green space at Alum Creek is enough.
The location should support the story rather than become the story itself.
For this couple, keeping everything simple allowed their connection to become the most important part of every frame.

Engagement Photos Should Feel Like You
Every couple is different.
Some people want something cinematic and dramatic.
Others love editorial photographs inspired by magazines.
Some want a downtown atmosphere.
Others feel much more comfortable somewhere quiet and surrounded by nature.
There is no single location or photography style that works for everyone.
That is why we like to think about the couple first and the location second.
For this Alum Creek engagement session, a clean natural environment was exactly what we needed.
There was no reason to add more.
The green background, soft natural light, simple compositions, and genuine interaction between the couple gave us the aesthetic we wanted from the beginning.
And sometimes that simplicity is exactly what makes photographs feel timeless.
