A Mini Wedding in Downtown Columbus: When a Simple Ceremony Became Something More
Not every wedding begins with a big plan.
Sometimes a couple simply wants to get married, keep things small, and enjoy the moment without turning it into a huge event.
That was exactly how this wedding started.
When the couple first contacted us, they told us that their wedding was going to be very small. There would be a short ceremony at a government building in Columbus, a few important people, and that was it.
No large reception.
No long wedding timeline.
No elaborate plans for the day.
Just a simple ceremony and the beginning of their life together.
And honestly, we loved the idea.
There is something beautiful about couples who don’t feel the need to make their wedding bigger than it needs to be.
But when we met them, we immediately noticed something else.
They were an incredibly beautiful couple, and there was something very natural and romantic about the way they looked at each other.
As photographers, we couldn’t help thinking that this deserved to be more than just a few photographs inside a government building.
A Small Idea That Changed the Day
The original plan was simple: photograph the ceremony and finish.
But as the day unfolded, we started thinking about how we could give the couple a few more memories without turning their small wedding into a completely different event.
We didn’t need a complicated plan.
We didn’t need to organize a full photo session weeks in advance.
We simply needed a beautiful place and a little bit of time.
So, right there during the wedding day, we came up with an idea.
After the ceremony, we suggested going to an old historic building right in downtown Columbus.
It was close enough to make it easy, but it completely changed the atmosphere.
Instead of ending the wedding day immediately after the ceremony, the couple suddenly had the opportunity to step outside, walk through downtown together, and have a few quiet moments as newlyweds.
And that small decision turned out to be one of our favorite parts of the entire day.
From a Government Building to Historic Columbus
The contrast was perfect.
The ceremony itself was simple and official.
Then we stepped outside and headed toward one of the older buildings in downtown Columbus.
The architecture gave us a completely different backdrop — historic details, stone, beautiful lines, and the feeling of being somewhere that had its own story.
But the location wasn’t really what made the photographs beautiful.
It was the couple.
Once we got there, we didn’t want the session to feel overly posed.
We simply gave them space to be together.
They walked side by side.
They talked and laughed.
They looked at each other.
Sometimes they stopped for a few portraits, and other times we simply photographed what was happening naturally.
And slowly, the simple courthouse-style wedding became something that felt much more like a romantic wedding story.
The Beauty of Keeping Things Simple
There is a misconception that you need a large wedding to have beautiful wedding photographs.
This day was a perfect example of why that isn’t true.
The couple didn’t have a ballroom.
They didn’t have hundreds of guests.
They didn’t have hours of planned events.
They had a short ceremony, each other, and a little time afterward.
And that was enough.
In fact, because there were so few distractions, we were able to focus completely on them.
Their expressions.
The way they held hands.
The way they looked at each other when they thought nobody was watching.
Those little moments became the heart of their wedding gallery.
A Romantic Walk Through Downtown
One of our favorite things about photographing small weddings is that the day doesn’t always have to follow a strict schedule.
Sometimes the best photographs happen because you decide to take an extra twenty minutes.
Sometimes you see a beautiful location and think, Let’s stop here.
Sometimes the original plan simply changes.
That is exactly what happened here.
What was supposed to be a short wedding ceremony turned into a small romantic adventure through downtown Columbus.
The old building gave us the atmosphere we were looking for, while the couple brought all the emotion.
We photographed them walking together, standing close to one another, and simply enjoying those first moments of being married.
There was no need to force anything.
Their connection was already there.
Our job was simply to notice it and preserve it.
More Than Just a Ceremony
Looking back at the photographs, it is hard to believe that this wedding was originally supposed to be just a very short ceremony at a government building.
The couple came to us expecting to have a few photographs from their ceremony.
Instead, they left with a complete little story of their wedding day.
The official moment when they became husband and wife.
The excitement afterward.
A walk through downtown Columbus.
Beautiful portraits in front of historic architecture.
And, most importantly, photographs that show how they felt about each other.
